Born in 1923 in Deshahalli, Maddur taluk, Mandya district, a school dropout joined Independence movement in his younger days, Shri G. Narayana, dedicated his life to the nation. The service rendered by him as mayor of Bangalore in 1964, President of Kannada Sahitya Parishath in 1969, President of Karnataka Press Academy in 1987, President of Kannada Development Authority in 1992 is unforgettable. Shri.G. Narayana has a captivating personality and capable of winning the hearts of one and all by his balanced views, strict discipline, and simplicity, matured thinking and restrained talk. Started a monthly magazine 'VINODA' in 1951 and has been a very capable editor for the last 55 years.

 


With his great organizing ability, capacity, vision, in-depth knowledge, he gave new direction to Kannada Sahitya Parishath. He gave a fillip to the Janapada development and was instrumental in bringing recognition to the Janapada art. With the support and encouragement of Shri.Nagegowda and Shri. Go. Ru. Channabasavappa, he organized Janapada seminars at district level throughout the country. Shri Narayana nurtured the idea that folk culture should be preserved and developed. During his tenure as president of Kannada Sahitya Parishath he arranged for a detailed study and scrutiny of folk culture thought out the country He employed a fleet of young and enthusiastic people for this task. As a result of this 'Karnataka Janapada Kalegalu' a book on folk culture was published under the editorship of Shri. Go. Ru. Channabasavappa. This publication earned the distinction of being the first book in the field of Janapada. In addition to bringing out this book Shri. G. Narayana was instrumental in making documentary films on Janapada Art.

It is not an exaggeration to say that G.Narayana who arranged a public felicitation to H.L. Nagegowda on his retirement from government service and presented a purse was responsible for the birth of Karnataka Janapada Parishath.

G. Narayana a doyen in the field of Janapada has played a pivotal role in establishing institutions by dynamically extending encouragement for the growth and development of Janapada movement.

No one is able to keep account on the number of felicitations and awards bestowed on Sri. Narayana for the selfless service rendered by him. Rajyotsava Award 1971, Karnataka Patrika Academy Award 1994, Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Academy Award 1995, Srinivasa Rao Mangalavade Memorial 'Kannadasri' Award 1996, Prestigious Nadoja Award of Hampi Kannada Vishva Vidyalaya 2004, Ekikarana Award of Karnataka government 2006 are some of them. G.Narayana has left a mark in the cultural world of Karnataka by being the guiding force to start many cultural institutions like Karnataka Gamaka Kala Parishath, Karnataka Lekhakiyara Sangha, Shashi Kalavidaru and Sharada Vidyapeetha.
